What is Naxnok?

Naxnok refers to ceremonial re-enactments of ancestral events, migrations, conflicts, rescues, supernatural encounters, and House-defining histories. These performances are not “shows” — they are **lawful, authoritative expressions of adaawx**.

Through Naxnok, a wilp:

• displays its history,
• affirms its rights,
• teaches the next generation,
• connects ceremony to land,
• and honours those who lived before.

Purpose of Naxnok

Naxnok exists to:

• keep ancestral memory alive through action,
• transmit adaawx in ways that words alone cannot,
• confirm a House’s authority over names, crests, and places,
• strengthen relationships with visiting Houses,
• help youth see themselves inside their lineage,
• and maintain the link between land, identity, and responsibility.

Naxnok is part of how truth becomes visible.

Naxnok in Feasts

Naxnok is often performed during larger feasts such as the li’ligit or luulgyit, especially when:

• a name is being transferred,
• a crest is being displayed,
• land rights are being affirmed,
• a major story is being acknowledged,
• children are being introduced to their lineage roles.

The dance, regalia, drumming, and movements **embody the adaawx**. The audience becomes witness to the truth.

Legal Authority of Naxnok

Within ayaawx, Naxnok carries legal weight because:

• reenactment = affirmation of rights,
• performance = public witnessing,
• participation = acknowledgment of lineage,
• regalia = lawful symbol of authority.

Naxnok is a House’s “living document.” Instead of paper, the body, mask, drum, and movement speak.

Teaching Through Naxnok

Youth learn:

• who they are,
• where they come from,
• what their roles will be,
• what stories define their wilp,
• and how to carry their identity with łoomsk.

Elders and sigyidm hana̱'a̱ guide the meaning. Dancers, drummers, and singers work together to keep it correct.

Improper performance is a breach of ayaawx.

These moments carry power and must be treated with respect and correctness. Not all Naxnok are appropriate for all occasions.

Today, Naxnok continues because:

• it teaches youth in embodied ways,
• it strengthens regional unity,
• it restores pride and belonging,
• it carries healing for individuals and families.

Even if the setting changes — the law within Naxnok remains.
