Authority from Lineage, Name, and Conduct
Authority from Lineage, Name, and Conduct
Category: Tsm’syen Law Page status: Working
Purpose
This page explains how authority arises within Tsm’syen society through lineage, names, and conduct. It records the principles that determine how individuals come to hold responsibility and recognition within the wilp and waap.
Definition
Authority within the Tsm’syen system does not arise from election, appointment, or external institutions.
Authority arises from a combination of:
- lineage within a wilp
- the holding of recognized names
- conduct consistent with ayaawx
These elements together determine whether a person is recognized as carrying responsibility and authority within the house.
Lineage
Lineage establishes a person’s place within the wilp and waap.
Through lineage, individuals inherit:
- relationships within the house
- connections to house territories
- eligibility for certain names and responsibilities
Lineage alone does not create authority, but it establishes the framework within which authority may arise.
Names
Names carry the authority and responsibilities of the house.
When a person takes a recognized name, they assume the responsibilities and expectations associated with that name.
Names connect individuals to:
- Adaawx
- the history of the house
- territorial rights
- obligations to the wilp and waap
Authority therefore follows the name rather than the individual alone.
Conduct
Authority must be supported by conduct consistent with ayaawx.
A person holding a name is expected to demonstrate:
- responsibility to the house
- respect for the law
- care for house members
- proper conduct in relations with other houses
Failure to uphold these responsibilities may weaken or remove recognition of authority.
Witnessing
Authority is recognized through witnessing.
When names are transferred or responsibilities assumed, these events are witnessed by other houses and clans. Witnessing confirms the legitimacy of authority and ensures that governance remains transparent and accountable.
Balance
The combination of lineage, name, and conduct maintains balance within the house system.
Lineage provides continuity. Names carry responsibility. Conduct demonstrates the rightful exercise of authority.
Together these elements ensure that governance remains grounded in ayaawx and the histories of the people.
